POSITION DESCRIPTION

Staff Counselor/Master’s Internship & Practicum Coordinator

Michigan State University Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS) provides a wide range of mental health services for students on campus, including and not limited to: screening/triage appointments, individual and group therapy, psychiatric services, outreach and multicultural engagement, clinical care coordination, intensive integrated clinical services, and hospitalization coordination and support.

This is an especially exciting time to join our staff. In August 2017, MSU’s Counseling Center officially joined with the Psychiatry unit from our Student Health Service to become Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS). CAPS moved into a larger, newly renovated space on the third floor of our Student Health Services building, where our offices now overlook beautiful brick buildings and tall, mature trees. The CAPS department is undergoing a significant period of growth currently, including an expansion of our crisis response capacity and group therapy services. Position Description

Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS) at Michigan State University invites applicants for a full-time master’s level Mental health clinician (i.e., Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, etc.) who functions as the Master’s Internship & Practicum (MIP) Coordinator to join our growing team. We are a diverse and multidisciplinary staff who strives to use multicultural and collaborative approaches to provide quality care. Moreover, we work to connect each student with the most appropriate and available resources and services within CAPS. The Master’s Internship and Practicum Program (MIP) is a multi-disciplinary training program for both Master and doctoral level practicum students and master’s internship students in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work and related counseling/psychotherapy training programs.

The Staff Counselor/MIP Coordinator is a generalist position and will provide direct services and outreach to a diverse student population as well as will provide leadership for MIP training program at MSU CAPS including but not limited to the further development and implementation of the MIP training program’s mission, vision, policies, procedures and training. We welcome applicants with experience and interest in providing general clinical services and those that have a passion for multiculturalism in mental health and a special emphasis in supervision and training and additional experience or interest in program development. Salary range begins at $66,650 and is commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Director of CAPS and reporting to the Assistant Director-Training & Research (Training Director), the Staff Counselor/MIP Coordinator will provide comprehensive psychotherapy services at CAPS for students to include but not limited to: screening/triage, individual counseling, group services, and provide advocacy and crisis intervention services. As part of a multidisciplinary health team, they will communicate with other staff members to establish appropriate plans of care. This position provides training, supervision, program implementation and other duties as assigned. Additionally, the Staff Counselor/MIP Coordinator will coordinate and assist the Training Director in further development and implementation of the MIP Training program at MSU CAPS. More specifically, the Staff Counselor/MIP Coordinator will engage in the following but not limited to: Recruitment of MIP trainees, provide leadership for the coordination of MIP Training Program, develop and implement training germane to multicultural competencies in multi-disciplinary mental health, as well as broad competencies in mental health care appropriate for trainees at this level of training, apply both state regulations/guidelines as well as national accreditation standards to training multi-disciplinary trainees, collaborate with Training Director in the broader execution of training goals for MSU CAPS as a whole, onboard and train new trainees, help develop policies and procedures consistent with ethical guidelines, best practices, state mental health statues and HIPPA.


 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited program in a clinical mental health field professional psychology (e.g., Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, etc.)
  • Six to twelve months of related counseling/psychotherapy in a clinic/multidisciplinary setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Full licensure to practice without restriction in the state of Michigan.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Desired Qualifications

Preferred candidates have three years post-license experience in the delivery of clinical mental health psychological services; background in supervision, training, and program development, emphasis/interest in multiculturalism and social justice; experience in brief psychotherapy and crisis intervention; implementation of psycho-educational programming and outreach experience. Demonstrated competency or expertise in one or more specialty areas; working with diverse, multicultural student population including international students and students or color; working with LGBT populations; working in an Integrated Mental Health setting; working with mood/bipolar disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, eating disorders, trauma including PTSD and complex trauma, and substance abuse disorders; experience in clinical supervision, three to five years of professional experience; experience in interdisciplinary setting.
