POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Position: Reporting to the Associate Director for Clinical Services, the primary function of the Brief Intervention Specialist is to provide a range of culturally responsive "rapid access" or urgent care services. These services will include crisis assessment and intervention, brief solution-focused interventions, brief initial assessments (triage), facilitation of referrals to inpatient and outpatient community providers, and other single session interventions. While the therapist in this position may carry a small caseload of traditional psychotherapy clients, the primary focus will be brief interventions of 1-3 sessions. The successful candidate will have strong general therapy skills including crisis assessment and intervention and will be comfortable working with a wide range of clinical issues within a?short-term?treatment model. This position includes opportunity for engagement within the university community through community intervention and outreach, development of liaison relationships with campus partners, and mental health consultation with faculty and staff. The position also allows for participation in the center’s doctoral training program through didactics, seminars, and other teaching opportunities consistent with the needs of the training program. Finally, the person in this position will be expected to demonstrate clear commitment to all dimensions of diversity and to produce professional work that is cross culturally informed.?? 


Responsibilities: ·  

Direct culturally appropriate clinical service to students including:?? 

  • Drop-in appointments, brief assessment, and interventions?? 

  • Crisis assessment, intervention, and stabilization?? 

  • Assessment of suicidal ideation and dangerousness to self and others? 

  • Community and campus referrals  

  • Coordination of hospitalizations and aftercare?? 

  • Traditional individual, couple, and group psychotherapy based upon center needs. ?? 

      Coordination and collaboration with departmental staff?? 

  • Assistance with coordination of drop-in and other rapid access appointments?? 

  • General consultation regarding intervention?? 

  • Consultation and training with staff regarding brief interventions?? 

  • Participation in departmental staff meetings, committees, training? 

  • Training in doctoral clinical training program as needed.?? 


?Campus community engagement including:?? 

  • Presenting psychoeducational workshops, suicide prevention or Gatekeeper training?? 

  • Providing support at mental health related events?? 

  • Service on university committees. ?? 

 

? Administrative duties:?? 

  • Documentation of clinical notes?? 

  • Responding to client emails, phone calls, and other communication?? 

  • Coordinating client care, i.e., case management?? 

  • Responding to departmental and campus emails? 

  • Developing and maintaining a program of professional growth and development including maintaining active license to practice.

The Department: The Student Counseling Center is a full-service collegiate counseling center staffed by 11 licensed psychologists and 4 Master’s level therapists. The center also supports a robust APA accredited training program training 5 full-time interns and 8-12 doctoral psychology trainees. The Center shares a state of the art facility with the Student Health Center and the Center for Health Education and Wellness allowing for a wide range of collaboration in programming and student care.

 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications: ·?? 

  • Master’s degree or Doctoral degree in a mental health related field?? 

  • Licensed or license eligible to practice independently as a health services provider in Tennessee?? 

  • Must be fully licensed to practice independently within 18 months of start date?? 

  • 3 years of experience providing mental health services (supervised experience included) 

  • Experience in suicide and risk assessment and intervention?? 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume clinical setting with clients presenting in acute distress, maintaining composure, and communicating effectively to client and clinical team  

  • Knowledge of and a commitment to diversity, i.e., clear history of building an inclusive work environment.??


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications: ? 

  • Demonstrated interest and experience working with international, historically underrepresented, and/or underserved student communities?? 

  • Experience providing psychological services in a college counseling center?? 

  • Extensive experience in assessing and intervening in mental health crises including suicide risk, active psychosis, mania, and other presentations that represent significant clinical risk  

  • Experience in reducing barriers to student mental health care in a multicultural university environment

The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and other qualifications and is accompanied by a standard university benefits package.
