Search for the Associate Dean of Health and Wellness

and Director of Counseling and Psychological Services

University of San Francisco

San Francisco, CA

The University of San Francisco (USF) seeks an accomplished leader with a holistic vision and passion for the health and wellness of students to serve as its inaugural Associate Dean of Health and Wellness and Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) (Associate Dean or AD). This is a tremendous opportunity for a visionary mental health provider to lead a new unit within the division of Student Life and set the stage for innovative approaches for health, wellness, and safety. By bringing Recreational Sports and Health Promotion Services together with Counseling and Psychological Services, USF seeks to create a more holistic perspective and culture of health and wellness by providing coordinated services, programs, and outreach to students and the USF community. The AD will lead a dedicated team of clinicians, professional staff, and student employees focused on meeting the physical, psychological, emotional, intellectual, and social needs of the USF student community.

USF is widely recognized nationally and internationally as a premier Jesuit, Catholic, urban university with a global perspective. Established as San Francisco's first institution of higher education in 1855, the University of San Francisco serves over 10,600 students in Arts and Sciences, Management, Law, Education, and Nursing and Health Professions. USF offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional students the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as persons and professionals, and the values and sensitivity necessary to be “people for others.” The University takes pride in educating leaders who are committed to creating a more humane and just world, inspired by the vision to "Change the World from Here." USF has been recognized as among the nation’s most racially diverse universities and among those with the highest proportion of international students.

The AD will be joining a vibrant division of Student Life that supports holistic student development within a social justice framework. The AD will report to and work in close partnership with the Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Students and other leaders in the division of Student Life to lead the exciting new Health and Wellness unit. The Associate Dean will provide vision, strategic planning, and assessment for health and wellness in the division of Student Life and oversee all clinician therapeutic activity, define and disseminate CAPS scope of practice, and promote CAPS services to the campus community. The Associate Dean also oversees the University’s health promotion initiatives and health services for the student population and the recreational sports department and recreational sports facility serving approximately 550,000 users annually. The AD will be a thought leader who will shape the role to most effectively improve university health, grow offerings, innovate, and increase accessibility for USF students. To help establish and grow Health and Wellness at USF, the AD will address a set of key opportunities and challenges:

  • Develop a strategic, cohesive vision for Health and Wellness at USF;
  • Lead a well-integrated unit that provides exceptional outreach, programming, and services;
  • Provide care that represents best practices in university mental health services;
  • Lead a multidisciplinary, culturally-competent, and team-oriented staff;
  • Support continuous growth and innovation in Health and Wellness; and
  • Promote and maintain an engaged visibility with the division of Student Life and across the university.
