Job Summary:

The Dr. Bob Smith Health Center, at Southern Methodist University, is seeking a Counselor at our state-of-the-art campus facility.  The Counselor provides mental health services to enrolled students and outreach and consultation to SMU students, faculty, and staff while interfacing with the Division of Student Affairs and SMU at large.

Essential Functions:

·         Direct psychological services for students (individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, referrals) and consultations regarding students.

·         Case management and administration.  Supervision of counselors in training, as applicable.

·         Meetings, outreach, and committee involvement.

·         Professional Development

Physical/Environmental Demands:

This position must be able to sit for long periods of time.

Education and Experience:

Master’s degree required.  Those with a Doctoral Degree are encouraged to apply

 Licensed in the state of Texas (or license eligible) in psychology, counseling, social work or related field is required. A minimum of two years of counseling work experience is required. Work experience in a college or university counseling center is preferred. Thorough knowledge of and experience with administration and interpretation of psychological tests is preferred. Solid experience with crisis intervention is required. Supervisory experience of counselors in training is preferred.

 Experience utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required. Experience with Electronic Medical Records and psychological testing software is required


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, with the ability to interface professionally with students and staff. 

 Candidate must have strong diagnostic and case conceptualization skills with the ability to develop, implement, and evaluate effective treatment plans.

 Must have astute problem solving skills, especially relating to clinical emergencies. A strong customer service orientation is essential, with the ability to consult and work with staff. Candidate must handle Electronic Medical Records and other private information with complete confidentiality and adherence to legal and ethical principles associated with the field. Must have excellent organization skills that includes effective planning and time management, as well as attentive to details. Must be willing and able to work after-hours and weekend on call duty, which rotates weekly within staff.
