Counselor, Student Health Center

The Counselor is a generalist position that supports the mental health of students, through individual and group counseling, outreach/programming, and consultation. The Counselor will seek to intervene and assist with personal student growth or emotional remediation. This position will oversee practicum student development, outreach programming such as campus resilience, fulfill case management tasks as needed, and will maintain contact with partners within the college community and in the greater Sarasota/Bradenton area.  Counselors participate in the on-call duty rotation and the Pre-College summer program as needed.


The Counselor must have the ability to perform intake assessments and individual/group psychotherapy within a brief framework.  Provide follow through for case referrals and after care assistance to students, provide timely and accurate documentation, and assure confidentiality. This position requires multicultural knowledge and the ability to model sensitivity to diversity and international populations. The Peterson Counseling Center strives to serve students that support and affirm all identities.  Provide consultation services to all faculty and staff on matters dealing with the distressing student, assessment of behavior and the referral process.


Successful candidate must have ability to work well with a diverse population of college age students, parents, faculty, and staff. Excellent organizational and communications skills, both written and verbal. Ability to maintain complete confidentiality. Knowledge of young adult development and the ability to assess/diagnose severe psychopathology is necessary. This position will provide crisis response including, when necessary, executing Baker Acts.


Minimum Qualifications: 

·       Advanced degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology or related field (Master’s level and above)

·       Current licensure (or license eligible within one year) by the State of Florida

·       Demonstrated experience in providing brief therapy, crisis intervention, group therapy, outreach, care coordination and case management


Preferred Qualifications: 

·       Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.)

·       Three years previous experience in a college counseling center or outpatient mental health setting
