 Summary Statement

 The Director of Counseling/Counseling Psychologist provides counseling, psychotherapy, mediation, consultation, evaluation, referral services and educational outreach to the Montserrat community.  The position is full-time, 37.5 hours per week, full year.

 Counseling services have traditionally been offered with a focus on prevention and wellness with an emphasis on developing students to their full emotional, intellectual and creative potential. Counseling services are free to students. The director of counseling/counseling psychologist will be a visible and engaged member of the Student Affairs staff and will build upon the established wellness model of support for the community. Collaborating with student affairs offices, the Academic Access Studio, and Academic Affairs, the director of counseling/counseling psychologist will participate in campus activities and initiatives that support our diverse community of artists. The successful candidate has working experience in the higher education and showcases a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.

Major Functional Areas and Description of Duties

  • Provides counseling and psychotherapy to students
  • Conducts workshops for students and on occasion for faculty and staff
  • Offers mediation and evaluation services to students
  • Refers students to a variety of services in the community
  • Does collateral work, when needed with MDs, parents, therapists, hospitals,
  • Works closely with the Dean of Students and other Student Affairs staff, as necessary, regarding safety and prevention
  • Consults with the resident assistants individually and in groups
  • Attends Student Affairs weekly meetings and weekly one on one meeting with the Dean of Students
  • Provides psychological consultation to faculty and staff as needed
  • Participates in orientation each semester
  • Conducts training sessions with resident assistants and orientation leaders
  • Provides innovative and inclusive outreach and programming each semester
  • Coordinates with any additional services with whom the College is connected (after hours emergency care services, etc.)
  • Provides crisis intervention and triage as appropriate
  • Provides support to the campus community as part of an emergency response
  • Dedication to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion as it pertains to the college’s current strategic plan
  • Other duties as assigned


About Montserrat 

Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA was founded in 1970 and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The college has an enrollment of 370 students both domestic and international. Montserrat is a fully accredited college that offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 10 concentrations and five minors. The college offers robust, year-round, continuing education offerings throughout the year including summer programs for teens and children. Montserrat College of Art has a strong gallery and visiting artist program that is free and open to the public. Located in the coastal, historic city of Beverly, Montserrat offers the best of both worlds for its faculty, students and staff with access to the commuter rail (a 30-minute train ride to Boston) and three blocks to the Atlantic Ocean. 



Preferred Education:  PhD (or equivalent) in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an APA accredited program.

Required Education: Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or Social Work from an accredited program.

Required Knowledge/Experience: Have a demonstrated track record of four to six years practice as a mental health provider, with experience in a college or university counseling center or comparable mental health setting. At least one year of administrative experience in a mental health setting is also required. Excellent skills in written and verbal communication. Excellent generalist clinical skills. Psychologist must be licensed and insured in the state of Massachusetts.
