The Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator is a member of the senior staff clinical team, serving as a full-time therapist who acts as a generalist clinician with a specialization in substance use disorders. You will be responsible for meeting with students referred for conduct concerns related to substance use, as well as for providing therapeutic services and prevention programming to students who express interest in decreasing their substance use. This position upholds the university’s mission of treating all community members with respect and dignity, as well as pursuing justice and equity in their practices.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

Provide direct clinical service (55%)

  • Provide culturally informed, time-limited clinical services to university students in the form of individual, group, and couples counseling for a diverse student population across the spectrum of developmental and mental health issues.
  • Provide triage and drop-in consultations to university students
  • Apply skills and techniques of evaluation, assessment of risk of harm to self (suicide) or others, psychometry, and psychotherapy.
  • Diagnose according to the current DSM. Intervene in student mental health crises.
  • Conduct evidence-based substance use assessments for students referred by university partners 
  • Provide evidence-based psychoeducational consultations for students referred for substance use concerns
  • Utilize harm-reduction treatment strategies for students presenting with substance use concerns
  • Facilitate therapy groups and prevention workshops in response to student needs

Complete required support activities (13%)

  • Maintain accurate and timely case documentation.
  • Provide case management as needed for clients seen for assessment and clients in caseload.
  • Coordinate treatment and services with both on-campus and off-campus professionals.
  • When appropriate, communicate with students’ families in response to crises and to facilitate off-campus care.

Participate in consultation and outreach efforts (12%)

  • In partnership with the Assistant Director/Coordinator of Outreach & Health Promotion, develop and provide consultation and outreach programs that are specific to collegiate recovery and substance use risk reduction
  • Provide substance abuse prevention- related training and outreach presentations to the university community
  • Coordinate the Substance Abuse Prevention Team, an internal team of professionals who are trained in providing evidence-based substance use assessments, psychoeducational consultations, harm-reduction treatment strategies, and outreach/prevention programming

Training, Supervision, and Mentorship (15%)

  • Supervise graduate-level trainees.
  • Meet once a week at a minimum to provide face-to face supervision, providing case consultation and session videotape review.
  • Review and assign cases that are appropriate to the level of trainee development.
  • Review trainee documentation.
  • Teach intern seminars.
  • Guide trainees' in clinical, ethical, and professional development.
  • Provide supervision to interns with whom groups are co-facilitated.
  • Provide supervision to Peer Health Educators.

Participate in office administrative activities (5%)

  • Participate in Counseling Center administration activities including staff meetings and committees

Participate in other consultation, support, and training activities (<5%)

  • Consult with other staff and trainees about student mental health issues, attend weekly staff meetings, participating in peer consultation, medical-psychological consultation, and professional development trainings. Participate in continuing education activities as required for licensure and to build on professional skill development through professional workshops, online training, and conferences. This should include development and maintenance of skills in working with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, abilities, and lifestyles to support diversity and inclusivity in the Western community. Provide consultation and training to staff and pre-professional trainees in the counselor's areas of expertise. Keep the Counseling Center director apprised of latest research and treatment modalities in areas of expertise. Contribute to the University community by serving on committees, program involvement, or other campus-wide activities.

For Masters-level clinicians:

  • Master’s degree in mental health discipline.
  • Licensed as a mental health professional in the State of Washington or eligible for licensure in the State of Washington and gain licensure within thirty-six months of beginning position.

For doctoral-level clinicians:

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical or counseling psychology.
  • Licensed as a Psychologist in the State of Washington or eligible for licensure in the State of Washington and gain licensure within twelve months of beginning position.

All applicants:

  • Minimum of three years’ experience working with clients presenting with substance use concerns.
  • Ability to provide brief and focused counseling.
  • Experience and competency working with diverse populations with regard to race, ethnicity, ability status, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
  • Experience providing risk assessment and crisis response.
  • Experience facilitating counseling groups.
  • Experience working as a part of a collaborative, team-based approach to clinical services in a fast- paced work setting.
  • Minimum of one-year experience working in a college or university counseling center (practicum/externship/internship may be included).
  • For Masters-level clinicians, graduate of a CACREP-accredited or CSWE-accredited graduate program.
  • For psychologists, graduate of an APA-accredited doctoral program and/or completed an APA-accredited internship.
  • Experience working in a collegiate recovery/substance abuse prevention program.
