SMU Counseling Services has openings for a one-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship position for individuals who have successfully completed a doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology.  The position seeks applicants who are interested in providing psychological services to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students in a university counseling center.  Work is performed under the supervision of a licensed psychologist and in accordance with guidelines to help the professional meet requirements for licensure as a clinical or counseling psychologist.

Counseling Services, accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services, is housed in the Dr. Bob Smith Health Center and within the Division of Student Affairs.  Professional staff include five doctoral level psychologists, 1 masters-level licensed counselor, 1 substance abuse counselor, and 2 psychiatrists.  

Post-Doctoral Fellows gain experience as members of an inter-disciplinary team of physicians, substance abuse counselors and psychologists.  Located in the SMU Student Health Center, Counseling Services offers opportunities to consult and cross-refer with physicians, substance abuse counselors and disability services.

·         Graduation from an APA-accredited college or university doctoral program with an emphasis in clinical or counseling psychology

·         Successful completion of an APA-accredited internship program with demonstrated competence in clinical and/or counseling by the start date of the fellowship

·         Preferred experience or interest in working with students in a university/college mental health setting. 



Functional Duties and Responsibilities


·         Provides brief individual psychotherapy to SMU students (8 sessions per academic year)

·         Conducts individual and group psychotherapy and psychoeducational workshops for SMU students

·         Provides consultation to SMU students, parents, faculty and staff, and outside health providers

·         Conducts initial triage evaluations for incoming students seeking treatment

·         Works closely together with psychiatric and psychological staff in care for clients

·         Attends weekly staff meetings to discuss client and university issues 

·         Provides in- person, crisis intervention during office hours

·         Presents outreach presentations to the SMU community

·         Mentors pre-doctoral fellows from clinical psychology program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center


Knowledge, Abilities and Skills


·         Thorough knowledge of psychology and related fields.

·         Knowledge of research methodology.

·         Ability to deal effectively with clients in individual and group sessions.

·         Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and fellow employees.

·         Knowledge of basic computer skills and familiarity with electronic records systems

·         Ability to teach workshops as required.

·         Experience and ability to provide crisis intervention.



The Counseling Services post-doctoral fellowship is a one year, full-time position which begins mid-August 2020 and ends mid-August 2021.  The minimum salary is $42,656 with vacation, university and Health Center holidays, professional development time, sick leave, and the option to receive university health and dental benefits. The following additional benefits provided by the university include:  life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, social security, federal withholding, worker’s compensation, unemployment insurance, and the Family Medical Leave Act.

·         Transcripts of all graduate work in psychology  (unofficial acceptable for application purposes but official transcript is required if selected for the position)

·         Three original letters of reference, including at least two from clinical supervisors familiar with your clinical work that are submitted directly by the reference

·         A letter from your dissertation chair or program director that indicates the status of the dissertation, the anticipated  dissertation completion date, the conferral date of your doctoral degree , and a statement indicating that the doctoral degree will be attainable, complete, and conferred by the start of the fellowship in mid-August.
