Director of Counseling and Psychological Services

Duke University is pleased to announce a national search for the position of Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). This exceptional opportunity requires an experienced and skilled clinician to provide extensive strategic leadership and vision in the provision of services to meet the needs of a highly diverse and global student population in a dynamic campus environment. The Director will occupy a vital leadership role within Duke Student Wellness and the Division of Student Affair serving as a key thought partner with, and reporting to, the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students (AVP). Through innovation, collaboration, and excellent communication, the new Director will have the opportunity to be a transformational leader, identifying and implementing strategies to strengthen mental health services and programs to provide optimal utilization and systems to address student mental health and support students through direct service, outreach, consultation, and crisis intervention.

The Director will provide leadership to embrace new and creative models and facilitate innovative use of resources to serve the University's undergraduate and graduate student populations and engage with the staff. Educating across departments in student affairs, building engagement to support resiliency, and helping students navigate the steps in these processes are essential factors for success. The Director will manage opportunities to foster changes given the increased demand of services. As a campus mental health leader, the Director will be an advocate and visionary in thinking about effective systems and measures, embracing equity and inclusion values, and effectively listening to students and staff. The most compelling candidates will demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the current challenges and opportunities for the provision of counseling and mental health services and a significant and visible record of being an inspirational leader and effective supervisor with the ability to create an atmosphere for a collaborative and forward-thinking team.

Position Summary

The Director of CAPS partners with University leaders and serves as the primary leader in creating systems to effectively address all aspects of mental health for students. The Director is responsible for the direct oversight and management of the clinical, educational, fiscal, personnel, assessment, and administrative services of the department, which has an American Psychological Association accredited training program. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students (AVP), the Director plays a key leadership role in strengthening linkages between CAPS, other departments in Student Affairs and the larger campus community through the effective coordination of services and activities that support all of Duke's students. The Director provides vision and leadership in establishing and monitoring the scope and direction of CAPS, ensuring its operation is consistent with national standards of practice. As a licensed clinician, the Director provides direct counseling and education services to students; and provides consultation and guidance for crisis/liaison services, including intervention with emergencies and highly acute situations.

Overview of Key Responsibilities

1. Leads a multidisciplinary staff ensuring integration of clinical, outreach, training and quality assurance activities to accomplish objectives.
2. Provides leadership in developing and monitoring the department's strategic plan and budget, including outcomes assessment integrated with Division of Student Affairs goals and objectives.
3. Provides collaborative and consultative services to, and serves as administrative liaison with, diverse constituencies, including student affairs professionals and units, faculty, deans, student groups, parents, and University and Medical Center administrators.
4. Supports and develops a broad range of wellness (including suicide prevention) and outreach education services, including training, consultation, direct programming, media interventions and the deployment of peer educators.
5. Promotes and sustain efforts that advance multicultural organizational development, including, recruiting and retaining a diverse staff. Plans and leads staff development efforts in assessment, brief therapy, crisis intervention, leadership and professional inquiry.
6. Develops and implements performance evaluation standards based on best practices of all skills for culturally competent university counseling centers.
7. Enhances empirically based quality assurance analyses, which include research needs assessment, client satisfaction evaluation, and related outcome measurements. Considers and implements as appropriate the use of new technologies to improve service delivery and evaluation. Ensures HIPAA compliance.

General Qualifications

• Advanced degree in a mental health discipline (clinical psychology, counseling psychology, social work, psychiatry) from an accredited institution with strong preference for a doctoral level degree.
• Current licensure in the State of North Carolina or current licensure in another state and eligible to obtain North Carolina licensure. Psychologists who are not ABPP board-certified should consult the NC licensure board website for further information: www.ncpsychologyboard.org.
• Minimum seven (7) years of directly related full-time work experience in a mental health setting after licensure, with a demonstrated pattern of increasing responsibility.
• At least three (3) years of supervisory experience.
• Strongly prefer prior experience as director of a counseling agency in a higher education setting.

• Ability to juggle competing demands and set priorities to make continuous progress toward strategic goals;
• Demonstrated success in leading a professionally diverse, seasoned and multidisciplinary staff in a comprehensive counseling center;
• Experience in and/or vision for collaborative approaches to developing data-driven, evidence-based campus wellness initiatives;
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and experience addressing these issues in mental health settings and through informed treatment practices; ensuring efforts to address cultural competence across all facets of diversity;
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as demonstrated through experience as a department or University spokesperson who can relate to multiple and diverse constituencies, on- and off-campus.
• Demonstrated deep understanding of the educational value of an inclusive and equitable community;
• A demonstrated track record of advancing meaningful inclusion for staff and students of all identities includingbut not limited to race, class, and socio-economic status;
• Expertise in the provision of consultation services for staff and other constituents of the University community regarding complex clinical, ethical and legal mental health issues;
• Understanding of applicable compliance issues including, but not limited to, HIPAA regulations;
• Experience in the use of new technologies, including electronic health records, for improving the delivery and evaluation of services; and
• Experience and effective approaches to navigate the complexity and highly visible expectations high-profile, academic institution.
