The University of Virginia's Department of Student Health and Wellness, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is seeking to hire a full-time Staff Psychotherapist – Eating Disorder Focus.

We are a rapidly growing center looking for applicants who would like to join our team during this exciting time of expansion. Part of this growth involves expanding our integrative care services and increasing access to high quality care. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and decreases barriers to help-seeking and are looking for applicants who share these values.

The ideal candidate will have interest and experience in working with students presenting with body image concerns, disordered eating, exercise concerns, and weight-related issues.

Job responsibilities include providing triage, intake assessments, brief psychotherapy, group therapy, and crisis services (including occasional after hours on-call coverage). This Staff Psychotherapist will be a member of the multidisciplinary SHW Eating Disorders Consultation & Treatment Team. This position will work closely with CAPS psychiatric providers and serve on an interdisciplinary CAPS treatment team. While the focus of the clinical services will be on individuals presenting with eating, weight, exercise, or body image issues, the Staff Psychotherapist will also work with other clinical concerns.

The position also includes facilitating referrals to mental health services in the community. In addition, the Staff Psychotherapist will provide culturally inclusive community outreach and may participate as a supervisor in CAPS’ APA-accredited doctoral internship in Health Service Psychology.

We seek a candidate who is collaborative, has strong communication skills, practices good self-care, maintains healthy boundaries, and possesses the ability to manage a large and challenging workload. Early career therapists are especially encouraged to apply.

  • A Master’s Degree or Doctorate in Counseling, Clinical/Counseling Psychology, or Social Work
  • Licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or ability to obtain licensure within 6 months of hire)
  • At least 3 years of experience providing psychotherapy to adolescents and/or adults
  • Experience and/ or training in crisis intervention and/or facilitating transfers to a higher level of care.
  • Demonstrated interest, experience or training in eating disorder assessments and treatment.

  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary treatment team or in an integrative care setting.
  • Experience working in an eating disorder treatment program that includes intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, or residential treatment services.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in working with international students, BIPOC individuals, LGBTQ+ populations, and marginalized populations.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

The successful candidate will pass both a background check and a drug screen. Preference will be given to applications received by February 1, 2023.
