POSITION DESCRIPTION
The University of Pennsylvania is a culturally diverse institution,
with students from across the country and the world, representing a
broad spectrum with regard to race, class, ethnicity, age, nationality,
religion/spirituality, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ability.
Student Health and Counseling values social justice and
integrating cultural competence and humility into all services provided.
Postdocs join a very diverse staff that is actively engaged in
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives that promote awareness of
bias, privilege and oppression, and an understanding of the impact of
therapist and client social identities on life experiences and the
therapeutic process. Student Health and Counseling also has strong relationships with cultural
houses and other campus partners to increase inclusivity and access to
students with marginalized identities.
Viewed as emerging professionals, Psychology Postdoctoral Fellows receive the clinical
training and support needed to specialize in university mental health.
As full-time junior staff members, postdocs engage in a full range of
clinical, administrative, training, and outreach/prevention activities.
Postdocs
provide drop-in and crisis sessions, scheduled first visits, and
ongoing individual and group psychotherapy. At times there are
opportunities to supervise doctoral or master's level trainees or to co-facilitate a trainee case group. Postdocs help plan
and execute outreach and prevention activities on campus, including
workshops, presentations, and liaison/consultation with campus partners
on a wide range of issues involving the wellness of the student
population.
As clinical staff, postdocs attend departmental
meetings and professional development seminars. They are encouraged to
participate in one or more committees and clinical specialty
teams. In some cases, postdocs lead their own training seminars for
doctoral and master’s-level trainees. Postdocs are encouraged to
identify and pursue a clinical specialty related to university mental
health practice. Examples include eating concerns, sexual trauma, substance abuse, and working with BIPOC, LGBTQIA, international and
other marginalized populations.
Postdocs receive
two hours weekly individual supervision by licensed psychologists.
During the orientation period, postdocs meet with potential supervisors
and express their preferences to facilitate the matching of interests
and clinical approach in the assignment of supervisors.
A
weekly postdoc case group and weekly clinical team meetings may also
count toward an individual state’s group supervision requirements, if
applicable. Postdocs meet weekly with the training director, topics
including supervision of supervision, administrative issues, and
developing professional identity as a psychologist in a university
counseling setting.
