Staff Psychotherapist Outdoors and Nature Focus

The University of Virginia's department of Student Health and Wellness is seeking a licensed psychotherapist who specializes in nature-based and outdoor therapeutic approaches. This position offers a unique opportunity to integrate nature-based approaches into a university mental health setting, supporting student well-being through both clinical services and innovative outreach programming. As part of growing body of programs dedicated to integrative well-being (e.g., art, functional exercise, nutrition, coaching, biofeedback, and yoga), this position will provide both independent services and work closely with staff in Counseling and Psychological Services, Medical Services, Student Disability, and Well-being. The position will also implement nature-based programming in collaboration with other UVA departments, student organizations, and offices.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Services

• Create innovative outdoor and nature-based therapy programs tailored to the university setting
• Conduct initial assessments and diagnostic evaluations for students with mental health concerns
• Develop treatment plans that include recommendations for nature-based and outdoor activities to enhance mental health and well-being
• Provide brief individual psychotherapy focused on nature-based activities and interventions
• Lead outdoor therapy groups for students presenting with a range of mental health needs
• Coordinate with other clinical staff in offering outdoor therapy experiences to promote mental health
• Offer crisis support and intervention as needed
• Participate in case consultation with the Counseling and Psychological Services clinical team
• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
• May provide didactic training and supervision to clinical trainees.

Outreach and Education

• Design and facilitate workshops focused on nature-based coping skills, ecotherapy, and outdoor wellness activities
• Collaborate with University partners to develop nature-focused mental health and well-being programs
• Lead outdoor nature immersion experiences for students both locally and in remote locations (e.g., Shenandoah National Park, Morven Farm, Rivanna Trail system, etc.)
• Provide consultation to students, faculty, and staff on incorporating nature-based wellness into academic and other community contexts
• Develop assessment tools to measure the impact of nature-based interventions on student mental health
• Stay current on research and best practices in ecotherapy and outdoor-based mental health approaches.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's or Doctorate in psychology, social work, counseling or related field.
• Licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or ability to obtain licensure within six months of hire).
• At least three years of post-licensure experience, preferably with a focus on nature-based or outdoor therapy approaches
• Strong skills in program development, outreach, and workshop facilitation
• Knowledge of ecotherapy, wilderness therapy, or other nature-based mental health modalities
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in mental health care.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certification or specialized training in ecotherapy, wilderness therapy, or related approaches
• Experience leading outdoor group activities or nature-based workshops
• Familiarity with local natural areas and outdoor recreation opportunities
• Experience working in a university counseling center or with college student populations.

About the Position:

The anticipated hiring range for this position is$70,000.00-$100,000.00annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The selected applicant will pass a background check and health and drug screen. This is a full-time position with UVAbenefits. Employees benefits package highlights include:
