Springfield College invites applications for a Director of Counseling Center. The Director oversees the operation, programs, and service delivery of the College Counseling Center. The Director initiates planning and assessment activities to ensure high level of caring and confidential mental health services to undergraduate and graduate students. The Director serves as the lead student advocate for mental health needs on campus and provides consultation to faculty and staff in regard to student psychological concerns.

Manage all aspects of department including supervision of staff, budget planning and oversight, hiring and training of staff, conducting performance reviews, ensuring efficient and confidential operation of office, ensuring Counseling Center adheres to ethical and legal standards.

Provide psychological counseling to undergraduate and graduate students; assess students' psychological well being, create treatment plan and goals for individual students; maintain confidential documentation of progress; reach out to students identified as needing support for significant mental health concerns.

Provide psychological crisis services; serve in 24-hour on-call rotation, providing assessment and crisis intervention in emergency situations; assess imminent harm to self and others and create plan for safety, collaborate with other campus departments and staff involved in management of psychological crises. This includes serving on Students of Concern and Threat Assessment working groups.

Oversee programming, training, and other outreach services in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Outreach and Prevention that promote visibility of the Counseling Center and services; keep abreast of emerging trends in college aged student mental health and develop opportunities to raise awareness of entire campus community on issues pertaining to psychological concerns.

Provide consultative services to faculty and staff when concerned about students; bring forth emerging issues in college counseling and share strategies for engaging staff and faculty in addressing issues; attend weekly meetings of Students of Concern Team to provide guidance on effective outreach and on-going management of student cases.

Provide clinical supervision to professional and graduate student staff in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Clinical Services by serving as consultant on complex situations, reviewing documentation, providing opportunities to reflect upon work, offering feedback, and ensuring compliance with regulations.

Plan and conduct weekly staff meetings, provide professional development opportunities for staff, support research and other projects of interest to staff, encourage and support involvement in campus committees and professional organizations; maintain membership in professional organizations, attend conferences and professional development opportunities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree required. Doctoral/advanced degree preferred.

Licensure for state of Massachusetts required.

A minimum of three years experience in a college counseling center.

Direct counseling, supervision, and administrative experience.

Knowledge of state and federal guidelines regarding counseling center practices

Possess expert knowledge of mental health challenges of college students and best practices in college counseling.

Well developed therapeutic and assessment skills.

Demonstrated expertise in crisis intervention and management.

Maintaining relationships with campus partners such as faculty, Campus Life and Inclusion Staff as well as relationships with local agencies, practitioners, and off-campus support programs is critical to providing comprehensive mental health care and referral for students.

Serves in 24-hour on-call rotation, attends evening and weekend programs and events during academic year, represents department at special events. Is often involved in larger crisis management situations and decisions.
