Full-Time Licensed Social Worker

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Mental Health and Counseling Service seeks an experienced social worker to provide direct clinical services to MIT students and function as a member of MIT Medical’s Mental Health and Counseling Service’s Access Team. The Access Team serves as the acute triage team for the Mental Health and Counseling Service. Team responsibilities include responding to all triage calls and review of online triage forms; responding to urgent telephone calls from MIT deans, faculty, and staff; providing walk-in consultations throughout the day and short-term care for patients who require stabilization; meeting with patients being discharged from the hospital; conducting utilization reviews for hospitalized patients; assisting with patients being hospitalized; and providing follow up to previous night’s after-hours call. Mental Health and Counseling is a dynamic and comprehensive service staffed by over 30 social workers, psychologists, psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychiatrists. 


Minimum Requirements:

  • MSW from an accredited school of social work
  • Comprehensive social work experience with particular emphasis on the provision of acute care and crisis intervention
  • Extensive skills evaluating complex cases, triaging patients, addressing crises in the campus community, and working collaboratively on a team
  • Interdisciplinary experience
  • Demonstrated competency working with clients from diverse ethnic, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Must be comfortable and well-versed in short-term treatment interventions
  • The ideal candidate will be comfortable with high acuity and excel in fast-paced environments
  • Skills in assessment, diagnosis, and facilitating referrals is a priority
  • Work history should demonstrate ability for autonomous clinical practice, community outreach, and working in complex systems
  • Some evening and rotating on-call hours are required
