This 0.9 FTE Counselor position at University Health & Counseling Services (UHCS), with a reduced schedule during summer months, is a fully in-person clinical role designed to provide responsive, high-impact mental health services to students. The position emphasizes brief and developmentally informed counseling, crisis intervention, outreach, and consultation, supporting the holistic mental health needs of a diverse student population.
The counselor will be a highly engaged, on-site member of the UHCS clinical team, contributing to a collaborative, student-centered environment and providing timely support for students. Responsibilities include direct clinical services, crisis response, outreach, and consultation. Reporting to the Counseling Director, this generalist role promotes developmental, transitional, and preventive care while maintaining strong professional and ethical standards.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Services, Crisis Intervention, and Student Support – 70%
Provide individual, couples (when eligible), and group counseling using brief, solution-focused and strengths-based approaches.
Serve as part of the on-call crisis response rotation during business hours, providing same-day support, risk evaluation, safety planning, and short-term stabilization for students in acute distress.
Provide timely follow-up care and coordination of services, including case management and referral to campus and community resources as appropriate.
Collaborate with campus partners to support students experiencing elevated distress or crisis-related concerns.
Complete clinical documentation and reports in compliance with clinic policy, accreditation standards, and applicable ethical and legal requirements.
Outreach, Consultation, and Education – 10%
Participate in psychoeducational outreach and prevention programming each semester to promote mental health awareness, help-seeking, and resilience.
Provide consultation to faculty, staff, and campus partners regarding student mental health concerns, crisis response, and referral processes.
Contribute to University committees, initiatives, and program development efforts that support student well-being.
Deliver culturally responsive care and programming that reflects a strong commitment to accessibility, belonging, and social justice.
Collaboration and Professional Practice – 10%
Actively participate in weekly case conferences and function as a collaborative member of a multidisciplinary clinical team.
Maintain ethical standards consistent with the clinician’s professional organization and scope of practice.
Maintain required licensure and certifications, including continuing education.
Participate in safety protocols, emergency preparedness training, and crisis response drills.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Supervision of Trainees – 10% (flexible/role-dependent)
Provide clinical supervision to trainees, in collaboration with the supervisory team.
Participation in trainee supervision may include individual or group supervision and is adjustable based on experience, credentials, and departmental needs.

Administrative supervision is provided by the Counseling Director of UHCS.
Clinical consultation is collegial, collaborative, and team-based.

Required Qualifications:
Master’s-level (MSW, MFT, MS, MA) or doctoral-level (Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D. in Counseling or Clinical Psychology) clinicians are eligible to apply.
Current independent Wisconsin license (or eligibility to obtain within one year of hire) is required.

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting contract salary within the range of $56,000-$61,650 for a .9 FTE, commensurate with the candidate's education, related experience, and qualifications
