This is a senior clinical leadership role with both strategic and hands-on impact. Reporting to the Director of CAPS, you will serve as the primary lead for clinical services, ensuring excellence in care delivery, crisis response, and systems of support across the counseling center.

Position Summary

The Associate Director for Clinical Services is an essential member of the Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) Leadership Team. Reporting to the Director of CAPS, they are primary lead for clinical services within CAPS. This position is administratively responsible for overseeing the clinical operations, quality of care, and service delivery at a high-performing, multidisciplinary center. The Associate Director is also responsible for providing direct clinical services, supervises professional staff, advances strategic initiatives, and strengthens systems of care, crisis response, and mental-health-related programming. Actively participates in the provision, coordination, and oversight of crisis intervention services. Engages in the hospitalization process for students requiring a higher level of care, including pre-hospitalization assessment, coordination with emergency and campus partners, and post-hospitalization follow-up, reintegration planning, and safety assessments. The Associate Director will also manage the department in the absence of the Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Minimum Education

  • Doctoral degree in Psychology from an accredited educational institution; or a master's degree in social work, counseling, or related field from an accredited program. Doctoral degree preferred.
  • Must hold full, unrestricted licensure and supervision credential in current state of residence in one of the following disciplines: Psychology, LCSW, LCMH or LMFT; must apply for NC licensure within 30 days of hire, and successfully obtain unrestricted licensure in NC within six months from the appropriate licensing board (NC Board of Psychology, NC Social Work Certification and Licensure Board, NC Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors or NC Marriage and Family Therapy Licensure Board. Strongly prefer candidates who already hold the appropriate unrestricted licensure in NC prior to hire.

Required Minimum Experience

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in clinical leadership, demonstrated excellent clinical and leadership skills. A doctoral degree can be substituted for two years of the required experience.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strongly Preferred Experience and Education

Education/Credentials

  • Ph.D./Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-approved (or equivalent) internship.
  • Must hold full Psychologist licensure and supervision credentials in their current state and be eligible for the North Carolina licensure within 6 months of employment.
  • If current license is not issued by North Carolina, applicant must initiate the North Carolina licensure application within the first 30 days of the start date and obtain full North Carolina licensure within 6 months of employment.

Experience

  • 7+ years of demonstrated experience in progressive leadership and supervisory responsibilities.
  • 4-7 years of clinical experience in a counseling setting supporting young adults, with substantial experience working in a university counseling or comparable higher education mental health environment. 
  • Demonstrated experience in the provision of crisis assessment and intervention, short-term therapy models, and evidence-based practices.
  • Experience with training programs, supervising masters, doctoral, and postdoctoral training staff. 
  • Demonstrated background working effectively in a multidisciplinary setting, collaborating with diverse teams and stakeholders to advance service goals and support complex organizational needs.

Preferred Skills and Competencies

  • Demonstrated strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and management skills.
  • Clinical background supporting concerns commonly presented in university counseling center settings, including providing telehealth services and effectively working with an electronic health record system.
  • Deep commitment to multicultural competence, inclusive clinical practice, and effectively serving diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with campus partners and professionals across a variety of departments and functional areas.
  • Commitment to ongoing self?reflection, growth, and awareness related to intersectionality and the impact of marginalization, discrimination, and oppression on individuals and systems.
  • Knowledge of program evaluation, quality improvement initiatives, or data-driven clinical systems.
  • Knowledge and/or interest in preventative mental health education, outreach programming, and promoting student wellbeing.

COMPENSATION

Anticipated Pay Range

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $94,156.00 to USD $150,733.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
